History of Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is intended to celebrate the mothers in a family, as well as honor motherhood in general, maternal bonds and the place of motherhood in society. It is celebrated throughout the world, typically in Spring.
Although mothers and motherhood have been celebrated in various traditions for thousands of years, the modern Mother’s Day was first initiated in the United States by Anna Jarvis in 1907. Jarvis held a celebration for her own mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, at St. Andrew’s Methodist Church in West Virginia to recognize her passing. Ann Reeves Jarvis had been a peace activist during the American Civil War and had worked to create the Mother’s Day Work Clubs. Continuing the work of her mother, Anna Jarvis campaigned the U.S. Congress to make Mother’s Day an official holiday. By 1911, all U.S. states observed Mother’s Day.
